84. Celebrating the Rainbow God's Way & Re-Iterating His Promises This Month
Happy June! Today we're going to have a quick chat about God's purpose for the rainbow, and how we can hold firm to what he says instead of what the culture says. This is a touchy subject and I want to be clear that my heart is not to be aggressive or mean; it’s not to hurt people’s feelings. But, I do think as Christians, we have to stand for Biblical truth and unfortunately that often goes against the culture these days.
Our Symbol Was Stolen
I want us to remember what the rainbow really stands for because it has been stolen from us - our religious symbol of God’s promise was hijacked. When people see the rainbow they no longer think about God. He has been mocked. This beautiful symbol God gave his people has been mocked and Christians have just let it go. But now it’s time to take it back. I don't think the best way to do that is to necessarily always argue and talk about everything we’re against. I think we really need to talk about what the rainbow is for.
The rainbow was actually commandeered in the seventies when the LGBTQ movement started to gain some steam. And now because our culture is so divided, many Christians have been silent because they're afraid of being labeled a bigot, or have their businesses attacked. But right now, we need all hands on deck. We need to start conversations again about these things, and not be afraid to speak the truth of the Bible.
What Does the Rainbow Actually Stand For?
The rainbow is ultimately God's promise for protection and a covenant with man to never destroy mankind again. His judgment was restrained after flooding the earth and he promised Noah that he would never again wipe out creation like that. It’s an incredible and beautiful symbol because it’s such a picture of the gospel, of God’s mercy for his creation.
Every time we see a rainbow, we are reminded of God’s love and his promises for his people. And we don’t have to be a slave to this world, to the culture that we live in. Christ died to give us new life, an eternal life in heaven with him.
A Picture of the Gospel
So, every time you look at the rainbow, think about the gospel and the beautiful promise God gives us in Genesis 9:8-16. I encourage you this month to be reminded of what the rainbow actually stands for and have courage to share it. We need to stop censoring ourselves out of fear of the fallout. Don't be silenced by yourself or anyone else. Speak the truth, but speak it in love. Allow the person you are in private to be the person you are in public, and God will work out the rest especially if your business is on the line.
