The Callings of Christ

How should we understand the callings of Christ? "Come follow me, take up your cross, forsake all, and hate yourself?" Are these law passages or gospel? Should these callings be a burden on the Christian or comfort? How does the theology of glory vs the theology of the cross help our interpretation of these passages?
